Sustainability is a major component of the Vertical City concept. There are several environmental issues that Vertical Cities can potentially thwart, including the loss of farmland and natural greenbelts, air pollution, water pollution excessive energy consumption, soil degradation and garbage issue, and declining biodiversity.

In the book Vertical City, Kenneth King proposes an 8-8-8 Manifesto. The first "8" concerns the environment and what features a Vertical City should include to insure that it is sustainable.
